Jamila Hashmi’s novel Dasht-e-Soos stands as a monumental work in Urdu literature, weaving a profound narrative around the life and philosophy of Hussain bin Mansoor Hallaj, particularly his iconic proclamation "Ana al-Haqq" (I am the Truth). This study explores the novel through an Islamic perspective, analyzing its engagement with Sufi thought, the tension between Sharia (exoteric law) and Tariqa (esoteric path), and the interplay of divine and human love. The novel situates Hallaj’s spiritual journey within the socio-political and intellectual milieu of 10th-century Baghdad, portraying his martyrdom not as a tragedy but as a triumph of spiritual transcendence, embodying the Sufi concepts of fana (annihilation) and baqa (subsistence in God). Through poetic language, intricate psychological character studies, and vivid imagery, Hashmi transforms Dasht-e-Soos into a universal exploration of the human quest for divine truth. The novel’s integration of Islamic elements, such as tawhid (divine unity), Quranic recitations, and the sanctity of Ramadan, underscores its relevance in bridging individual spiritual experiences with collective religious frameworks, posing enduring questions about reconciling personal enlightenment with societal norms.
