Abstract

This research article examines the tradition of personal (subjective) poetry in Punjabi literature, tracing its historical development, thematic diversity, and artistic significance. Personal poetry holds a distinctive position in Punjabi literary tradition as a poetic mode through which poet’s express emotions, experiences, reverence, and ideological perspectives by focusing on individual personalities. The study explores the roots of this tradition in classical Punjabi poetry, particularly in religious and mystical genres such as naat, manqabat, kafi, si-harfi, marsiya, and qaseeda, and analyzes its gradual evolution into social, political, national, and cultural expression. From early Sufi poets like Baba Farid, Shah Hussain, Sultan Bahu, Bulleh Shah, and Waris Shah to modern and post-independence poets, personal poetry reflects both individual consciousness and collective social experience.
