Tauba-tun-Nasuh: A Narrative Study

Abstract

The novel Taubat-un-Nusuh by Deputy Nazir Ahmad is also significant for its didactic structure, where fiction becomes a vehicle for moral instruction and social reconstruction. Nusuh’s transformation is not merely personal but pedagogical; after his spiritual awakening, he assumes the role of a reformer within his household, emphasizing disciplined religious practice, ethical conduct, and education particularly for women. This domestic reform reflects a broader nineteenth-century reformist agenda that sought to rebuild Muslim society through the reorganization of family life, viewing the household as the nucleus of cultural survival. Moreover, the novel foregrounds the importance of education as a corrective force against moral and intellectual decline.
