Abstract

Riddles in Saraiki folk literature hold a significant position as an intellectual, literary, and cultural tradition. They serve not only as a means of entertainment and mental exercise but also as reflections of the intellectual, ethical, social, and linguistic consciousness of the Saraiki civilization. For centuries, these riddles have remained an integral part of rural life, where elders, women, and children would engage in asking and solving riddles during gatherings, communal sittings, and household conversations. Through this tradition, intelligence and observation were tested, while the elegance of language, richness of idiom, and imaginative expression were simultaneously nurtured. Saraiki riddles symbolically represent the practical realities of rural life agricultural practices, animals, birds, household objects, human relationships, and natural elements. In this way, they embody the collective consciousness of Saraiki culture. Through them, moral values, religious teachings, the dignity of labor, the sanctity of sustenance, and respect for elders have been transmitted from one generation to the next.
