The Role of the Pashtuns of Balochistan in the Promotion of Urdu Literature

This research paper examines the role of Pashtun writers from Balochistan in the promotion and enrichment of Urdu literature. Although Pashto is their mother tongue, many Pashtun writers have adopted Urdu as their primary language of creative expression. This linguistic and literary inclination stems from the strong socio-cultural and educational position of Urdu in Balochistan. Historically, Urdu emerged as a lingua franca in the region and, following British colonization, evolved into the language of administration, education, judiciary, and media. Its dominance in print culture-particularly newspapers, journals, and educational institutions-made Urdu more accessible and influential than other local languages. Consequently, Pashtun writers chose Urdu not only as a means of communication but also as a platform for literary creativity. Through their contributions in both poetry and prose, they have played a pivotal role in strengthening Urdu literature in Balochistan and integrating regional themes and experiences into the broader Urdu literary tradition.
